Ingredients

  • 2 sheets puff pastry
  • 3 heaped tablespoons Nutella
  • Egg wash (1 egg, lightly whisked)
  • Icing sugar for dusting (optional)
  • Berries for decoration (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 220°C.
  2. Place 2 sheets of puff pastry on a chopping board and cut out 2 Christmas tree shapes. Using a paring knife, cut a triangle from the top centre of the pastry. From the excess pastry, cut a star using a star-shaped cutter and set it aside. Remove any remaining excess pastry.
  3. Place one of the tree-shaped pastry pieces on a sheet of baking paper. Spread Nutella over this bottom layer, leaving a 1 cm border around the edges.
  4. Starting about 5 cm from the top, cut strips 1-1.5 cm wide on one side of the tree. Repeat on the opposite side, leaving a space in the middle for the trunk.
  5. Starting from the top, twist each strip of pastry toward the top of the tree. As you move down, you may need to make 2-3 twists per strip.
  6. Brush the entire tree with egg wash, including the star. Place the star on top of the tree and brush it with egg wash as well.
  7. Transfer the tree (with the baking paper) onto a baking tray. Bake in the oven for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown. Check at the 10-minute mark and rotate the tray if needed to ensure even browning, continuing to cook for an additional 2 minutes if necessary.
  8. Once the tree is baked, allow it to cool on the tray. When ready to serve, place it on a serving board or plate and lightly dust with icing sugar. If desired, you can decorate with berries or other festive treats.
